We Chat Lingerie With KISSKILL Designer Jane Carrodus
Posted on June 16 2016
Jane is one of the powerhouse females behind the Australian Brand KissKills. One of the favourite brands here at Tease. They boast femininity and a punch a little vixen in there too. We sat down with her to ask her a few questions about her sultry self, the brand, how she became a designer.
"Kisskill is a new Melbourne boutique brand specialising in lingerie. Kisskill intends to define the difference between underwear & lingerie. Kisskill is not about underwear - worn simply for function, it is lingerie to be worn behind closed doors, as well as a part of your everyday style – any time, anywhere. It conjures up a sense of intrigue and mystery surrounding what lies beneath leaving a woman feeling confident and empowered."
Hi Jane, Tell us a little about yourself…
I live in Melbourne in a really cool place called Elwood which is right near the beach. I love coffee & gin martinis. I don't eat meat except for seafood & fish. I’m 5”11 & a giant in heels. When I was growing up I used to draw & paint & wanted to be an artist. I love people & socializing but also love time alone to be creative.
Amen to coffee and gin martinis.
What was your design background before lingerie?
My career started working for an Aussie sleepwear label Peter Alexander. The brand is really fun & Peter gave me full ownership of my departments allowing me to be as creative as I liked, sometimes my designs bordered on being a bit too sexy or mature for the brand which is a more youthful aesthetic. So my progression into designing lingerie was a natural next step. I have ALWAYS been a lingerie addict!
So how did you start with KISSKILL?
I left PA to head up the design for a start up lingerie brand. The owners decided to close it 12 months after launching. The small boutique factory I was working with was facing closure & the work lingerie they were producing was such beautiful quality. I went out on a limb & decided to start my own label, with no idea where it would go. My close friend & business partner Vicky came on board not long after & together we have managed to build KISSKILL into a growing online, retail & wholesale business.
That you have.
What is the idea behind KISSKILL Lingerie?
The name of a brand has a lot to do with the design aesthetic, the previous brand I worked for has a French name so the lingerie had a luxury French influence. KISSKILL is more of a modern spin on lingerie, for the kind of girl who loves fashion, and styling her lingerie as part of her everyday outfit. KISSKILL woman dresses to KILL and is equal parts cool & sexy.
I defiantly see that in your pieces. They are always feminine and kick ass!
Do any other designers inspire you?
For design influence I look to what is going on in the fashion world rather than the lingerie world. I keep an eye on key colours, embellishments & hardware that can be adapted to lingerie. Brands like Alexander McQueen, Balmain, Balenciaga, Marchesa & Valentino always blow my mind & have a lingerie cross over in design. French label Alexandre Vauthier is also worth checking out.
We will have to check Alexandre Vautheir out here.
Fashion leaves great influence for me as well. Lingerie is surely turning into outwear and couture on the runway, which is amazing to see.
What is your favorite lingerie piece that you have designed so far?
I cant play favorites there are so many good ones. The BOND collection with black silk & rose gold zips has been in the collection since the start & is always a winner. The leather-look fabric we use is premium quality & I personally like wearing that the most. But Im VERY excited about the new collection launching later this year.
The Bond Harness is amazing. Its such a great statement piece. & so Unique.
If you could have any model wear your lingerie for a campaign who would it be?
My dream KISSKILL girl was Aussie model Cheyenne Tozzi, she’s cool & talented, we ended up working together on 2 collections & she modelled for both collections. So that was a dream realized.
When do you feel most sexy?
When I’m wearing fabulous shoes with my fabulous lingerie
OMG I’m doing some KISSKILL slippers I cant wait to show everyone.
DID YOU SAY SLIPPERS!!? We are just as excited for that!
What else does the future hold for you ?
I want to stay on top of my game & develop some really unique pieces. The last 12 months ive been busy running our store at the same time as trying to design product. We are more set up with an awesome team now so im concentrating on designing now.
Thank you so much Jane.
